On a day when the news media seem fixated on whether a misbehaving Miss America is justified in retaining her crown....
Colin Powell warns we're losing the war in Iraq. Powell contradicts President Bush's summation of the situation in Iraq, calls the situation there a civil war, and advises that a troop buildup will not help.

I can just see it now:
"How can we believe someone who told the UN some ridiculous made-up story about Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction? Either he knew he was lying, in which case his integrity is suspect, or he was gulled, in which case he's a fool."

The Atlanta paper today said that the president wants to ramp up the size of the Army and Marines. He refrained from using the d-word, though (rather coyly, I thought, leaving the options open for a draft). One of Powell's points was that the armed forces are currently stretched too thin and overtaxed, but he was not for increasing the size of the military.

That's easy: cuz he got fired. Disgruntled former employees love smearing the good name of their bosses. No, no, he didn't resign, that was just a cover up by the administration to protect him because they're nice guys like that. You know how I know he was fired? Because he's trying to smear the good name of his former boss.

I don't think it's something that would require a draft. The leadership of the Army and Marines essentially feel that, at this time, they are too spread out and risk breaking down because of a lack of active-duty soldiers. Since 2001, the Army has grown from about 480,000 active duty to about 510,000. They're essentially saying that now, to keep things running, they need a permanent increase of 20,000 to 40,000 active duty personnel. Bush has now come out in favor of that increase.
While there is also talk of increasing the number of troops in Iraq, which I'm sure has affected the timing of the announcement, this is technically a separate issue that would need to be addressed on a permanent basis even without the proposed increases within Iraq.
