A mouse rides on the back of a frog in floodwaters in the northern Indian city Lucknow June 30, 2006.
It's from a respected news agency, so I assume the picture is genuine, but is the caption an accurate description of what's going on? Could a mouse really decide to get a lift across the water (and the frog allow it), or could there be some other explanation for this behaviour?

The mouse may have just gotten tired from swimming and decided to take a rest of the first floating thing that came by. And I think the frog may actually be a toad.

Asnakeny hit it right on the nose. He's probably a toad who's inflated himself out of stress, which is why he's not diving under the water to shake off the mouse.

Rodents which think they are drowning tend to grab onto whatever comes their way. I can easily see the mouse doing this and not realizing it is sitting on a live thing... I've seen several of my pet frogs/toads just sit there while a large cricket climbs all over the amphibian's head, so it's not too much of a stretch to a mouse I guess. Although that mouse had better watch out, or it may become dinner.

I'm not one to call "photo shop" on everything, but that pic doesn't look right. The mouse doesn't look nearly as sharply in focus as the toad despite the fact that they are on the same plane. The lighting on the mouse also doesn't look like it has as much contrast as on the toad. And in the circled area (below), where the toad stops and the mouse starts, it seems like too clean of a line (possibly indicating a cut & paste job). The mouse's reflection is missing in the water, too.

t_chelle16: I don't see why you would see the reflection of the mouse. Only the underside of the toad is reflected. You can, however, see a vague blob which doesn't appear to be part of the toad's reflection (just next to the reflected eye) that might be the mouse's reflected nose.
I vote cute. And also real.
EDIT: here's me going on about vague blobs when there's a second picture available. Well... that as well.

I stand corrected. That first pic still looks a little odd to me, though, but I guess it's just the lighting.

It could also be an arranged pic, where a pet mouse was put on the back of a pet frog/toad. Perhaps they were already familiar enough with each other to not panic.
Shouldn't be that hard to arrange.

What? That's just a picture of my godfather, Toad L. Stranger, giving me a piggyback when I was a wee mousling.
