I don't know if these particular albums are real or not, but I also collect old albums with odd/cheesy pics or titles. I've seen a lot of locally produced gospel records that are very similar to the ones pictured.

I didn't check any of these out, but they look real to me. I have seen WEIRD stuff out there, so I don't doubt any of them. "Pooh-Man" is pretty icky, though.

Most look real, although a few appear to be 'shopped put-ons (i.e., "Cody Matherson, Can I Borrow A Feelin' " - a Simpsons reference, in case you missed it.)

I can remember seeing some of them from similar worst album covers ever lists, such as Devastatin' Dave, Joyce and Orleans.

I spend most of my teenage years in a used record shop, and I can verify that these are indeed real albums. You can find most of them on lists of the Worst Album Covers of all time. The only one I've ever seen in person is the Orleans album, with the ugly shirtless guys.
Does "Joyce" remind anyone else of Dustin Hoffman's "Tootsie"?

"Locally produced" is the keyword. "Amateur" is really the word I want to use, but I can't because someone with a record deal is, by definition, a professional. How about "amateurish?" These are not high-profile acts with big name agents and publicists. They had no album art design consultants, and probably the record companies just told them to send in a photo that they want on the cover. Group snapshots are cheaper to do than staging a professional photoshoot with sets and models, and, from my own experience in cover design, a high concept design is easier to envision mentally than it is to realize on paper.
And call me synical, but I'll bet that the songs on those albums sound as cheesy as the art looks.

If you liked those record covers you might also like this collection of Swedish dance band promotion photos (there are more links to photos on that site).

...and the one you've been waiting for. The winner for creepiness of photo, cheesiness of music, and glurge rolled into one...but wait, let's let the album notes speak for themselves: "My sister is writing for me. I am a boy seven years old. I am paralyzed and will never walk. I love your records very much and they help me to spend many happy hours as I lie in bed." "Dear Little Marcy, I am a little girl too. I lost my mother four months ago, and I want to ask you to pray for me."

I think "I'm In You" is a candidate for worst title, but not worst cover. Then again:
As one of my male friends said, "If you have to tell her you're in her...you've got problems."

Is the singer really a doll? Because it sure looks like it. Taking ventriloquism that one extra step?

My parents own that Orleans album. I have seen Devastatin' Dave on numerous websites/ message boards, but always as a joke, so I dunno.
Edited to add that Amazon sells that MC Pooh album with the same cover.

Yep, you saw it right. The photo depicts a doll propped up on a little stage in front of a mic with adoring, squeaky clean kiddies looking on. The woman doing the voice is named Marcy, and the doll is called Little Marcy. And yes, the doll looks like her...in a creepy, ventriloquism-doll way.

It's not entirely out of the question that the Simpsons writers were making a reference to that album.

As a fan of Outsider and offbeat music I have seen many of those covers from the OP on other sites. Most are hillarious. I have yet to find any of those albums in MP3 or some kind of format. I would love to know if they sound as weird as they look.

I stopped by the Salvation Army to flip through their records...I found another "Marcy/Little Marcy" album, from the same woman Bettie Page Turner mentioned above. I think the title was "Marcy Sings Sunday School" or similar. The cover was just as creepy.
I also found dozens of bad album covers by those amateur family gospel groups...but one in particular stood out. The woman's beehive hairdo was a foot tall but started from the middle of her scalp. The hair on the front half of her head was pulled back so tight it looked like she was half bald. I'm debating whether to go back and buy it solely so I can take a photo of such an ugly hairdo.
