I've seen this on one of the "news digest" sites claiming that this picture was taken in Florida and shows a genetic mutation (?) of a gorilla newborn:

The image is claimed to be taken from BBC site, however, I've been unable to find any articles about it. I also remember a lot of spoof rising from those plastic works of art. Is it the case here?

That is one ugly baby.

Did a google search for "humanzee," and while there is a band and a movie named Humanzee, as well as a humanzee named Oliver, this pic didn't come up.

I went to the site in the pic, and it's in Russian or something Cyrillic (right word?) Anyway, no pics of this thing on the front page, and lots of porn ads so I'm thinking it's not so trustworthy.

Could also just be a weird-looking gorilla baby, like it's purported to be.

Looks like a pretty normal baby ape, to me.

Except for the knit hat and fluffy towels, which you don't normally encounter in the wild.

Ah, I knew I saw this on Fark. The BBC article. Apparently her name is Bolingo.

What exactly is the mutation supposed to be? It just looks like a baby gorilla to me, but I haven't seen a whole lot of baby gorillas I can compare it to.

exactly. It's kind of like me saying "Dog born with four legs!" if you don't know what dogs look like, it might be impressive.

Sadly, that little thing looks like a lot of babies I've seen recently.

ETA: Kind of looks like Micheal Jackson with a sunburn come to think of it

Yep. A normal baby gorilla. Although the coloring looks different than that of the photo on the BBC news page.

A humanzee is a creature halfway between a man and a chimpanzee. Popular theory is that a few were actualy made in a lab in Japan, and then escaped. They used sperm from a human male, an egg from a chimp female and did some fiddly things with science to produce a humanzee, hoping to make a smart domesticated animal (ie: slave)

Actually, really interesting.

There is nothing to be afraid of with the link I gave you. There are a couple of pics, but nothing freaky. *grin*

Substitute Russians for Japanese, and you're talking about some real history. It was recently recounted in the New York Times, which I saw in a blog post by John Wilkins at Evolving Thoughts just today. Coincidence??

quote:
[Ilya] Ivanov set off for a French research station in West Africa. There he inseminated three female chimpanzees with human sperm. Not his own, for he shared the colonial-era belief that the local people were more closely related to apes than he was. He stayed long enough to learn that his experiment had failed.

Great. Except that Oliver was determined to be nothing more than a common chimp, with a few of his own personal quirks.

Well, then, I'm certainly glad that I didn't click.

Btw, I really do mean it when I say that I am very easily frightened/disturbed, people. [Frown]

It's not the pictures that freak me out, dear, it's the fact that people are crazy enough to do such experiments.
ETA: No, not exactly true, it's the reason why they decided to make such animal that freaks me out.

Well, I guess this goes under "Real photo, inaccurate description" category (it was alleged that this is an abnormal baby).

Oh a side note... following some links I read about the bonobo, which is our closest living relative...

"In bonobo society, the females take charge and keep lifelong bonds with their sons. When a daughter is old enough, she must leave the troop and find another one to join. She will breed with all the males in the new group, and she gains permanent membership when she gives birth. Adult females form strong bonds with each other. The female-led troops tend to be relatively peaceful, and bonobos seem to be sensitive to each other’s needs."

"Bonobos live a relatively peaceful life compared to chimpanzees. This is due largely to the fact that female bonobos are eight times more available to males for mating and there are equal numbers of females to mature males so there is less fighting for mating rights. Sex is an important way to ensure group stability and ease tensions. Bonobos substitute sex for aggression, and sexual interactions occur more often among bonobos than among other primates. Reduced male aggression, strong bonds between males and females, and frequent sex (including male-to-male and female-to-female) characterize bonobo society."

When you say "popular theory", you mean "anime", right?

I mean these are the same apes that went on to form "Monkey Monkey Jetpak" the scourge of the criminal mutant underworld in 2080's post-apocalyptic Japan.

Right?

Jeez, someone always has to get technical. Well, sure if you want to be a purist about it, that's the correct term.
