I got home today and my girlfriend told me that she found a inch or so piece of broken glass in her soup mix. She said she called the company and they are going to look into how it got there etc, but it got me thinking about how common something like that is.
Is it a common occurence to find odd objects in soup mixes? I know there was the planted finger in the Wendy's Chili a bit ago, but what about actual packets of food? I tried to find anything about finding glass in soups on Google but came up dry.

I found a large piece of chicken bone in my soup mix. It was a Chicken Noodle kind of Lipton's Cup-of-Soup packets. I probably should have called the company or something, but apathy wins most of my battles.
I found something that looked like small piece of glass or plastic in a beverage once, but I can't remember what kind.

Coincidently that's the same company as in my OP.

WellI know of two glass incidents. One was in a restaurant. My mom odered a sundae and thinking its was a nut bit into a hunk of glass. She broke a tooth and cut her mouth. We later found out that they stored there glasses one rack above the icecream cooler and apparently some one had broken one and it fell in.
The second case was my cousin had a batch of pilsbury biscuits that had glass weaved in thru the dough. They apparently heard from about 3 other people who also got that batch. Both of them sued and got a hefty sum.

I was eating a bag of Nabisco products. At the bottom of the bag was a different Nabisco product than that on the lable. I called customer servie and they sent me coupons for free Nabisco stuff.
Eating at Olive Garden I got a piece of glass in my cranberry sangria. Someone had broken a glass near the ice and they had thought they got all of it. No damage to me - the meal was free, of course. We actually went back after that, but soon gave up on the restaurant - the service was horrible.

I'm boring. I just occasionally bite into a teeny-tiny bit o' bone™ when I have Banquet™ brand chicken patties. It's more of an annoyance than anything. I've never been bothered enough by it to contact them.

I have received Glosette's chocolate covered raisens with a partially chocolate covered bee. And on the same trip to the convenience store my cousin's bag of Hostess potato chips included a nice piece of wood. I got laughed at on the phone with the Glosette company and told that it was impossible for such an occurence, but my cousin was given $100 worth of coupons as an apology as they had had several calls about pieces of wood being in with other bags of chips fromt he same batch.

Some of the things we've found in food include: a staple in a lick's burger (at the restaurant) a small piece of metal (from the production equipment?) in a sausage plastic packaging material in breaded shrimp plastic shards in a glass of pop (glass was new) glass in a pina colada (last night at Marche) plastic packaging in a chocolate-coated strawberry (last night at Marche)
At a restaurant I always let them know, in case it affects someone else, as well. I've only complained a couple of times to the the company, with food I've gotten at teh grocery store. In both cases, they wanted the packaging material sent to them, and they sent me some coupons.

A little different, but I had a can of diet cherry Coke that came out of a 12 pack empty. There was no sign of any hole or tampering or anything like that. Called the company and they sent me some Coke items and a coupon for a free 12 pack.

I'm surprised at all the things people fine in foods. I thought modern methods and fear of lawsuits and the like make the chances of something ending up in food to be rather slim. Guess I just didn't open my eyes enough!

Once at a resturant I bit into a cheese burger and found the plastic wrap from the "fake cheese" was melted into it!

I was eating at Katz's Deli in Austin one evening, and I thought my sandwich was a little tough, until about halfway through, when I actually looked at it and realized that I was eating the wax paper that the cheese was wrapped in, too. I was completely and thoroughly embarassed.

LOL This exact same thing happened to my sister (the pahnts sister), only she had made the sandwich HERSELF!!! We were camping, it was dark, she had been drinking...but still, she had eaten about half of her sandwich before she realized the paper attached to the cheese!! It was sure amusing to witness!

You will notice that a lot of the incidents are post-production, when the food is being served. The incidents during production probably involve items too small to be caught or not watched for. In most cases, it was probably the result of an accident that was not thought to affect the product.
If you have ever seen footage of a modern food plant, you will note the speed at which items tend to travel. Now, if something is accidentally broken (e.g. a wooden pallet) near the line, it may not be realized that pieces ended up on the conveyor and were mixed with the food.
BTW - this explains why most processors have a metal detector built in. It will find pieces of machinery that fall off and into the food prior to shipping.

My ex found half a cow's ear in can of corned beef. The company that made it (fray bentos) gave him a "hamper" (read: a bunch of their products in a box) to shut him up.

I found a chicken toe in one of those pre-packaged chicken salad sandwiches you buy at convenience stores. Luckily I found it before I fed it to my son who was about 2 at the time. I kept it for a few days, then ended up throwing it away.

Once I was eating at a somewhat nice restaurant in Fort Bragg, California, and there was Saran Wrap in the mashed potatoes. They offered me more mashed potatoes, but I didn't really care and I just ate the rest of the meal.
I've found some pretty harmless stuff too- a piece of corn husk in a can of corn, etc. Stuff that is more of an annoyance than a hazard. In elementary school, I did have a friend whose family found rat skin in a can of creamed corn. I think they just returned it to the store for a replacement. Mind you, I don't think they wanted to eat it for a few days...

I found a huge Bluebottle frozen into the side of a lolly once. I called the store and they gave me another box. Cheers...
I've also had a live wasp. It'd flown into an open can of Coke that was sitting outside in the summer. That's a mouthful I don't want to repeat.
