I want to take a few screen captures from a DVD being played on the computer. When I try this with the "Print Screen, then paste into Paint" method, I just get a black image when it's pasted.
I thought it might be because the image was moving, so I paused it first, then hit "Print Screen" - again I just get a black image.
I found a website where a guy had exactly this problem - it said it could be solved by unchecking the 'use overlays' box in Windows Media Player. So I tried playing the DVD in Windows Media Player and unchecking this box, but this was no help at all - same problem.
I have managed to take screen captures from DVDs using the simple "print screen" method before, so I know it isn't impossible - any suggestions as to how I might solve this? In simple terms, mind.

it doesn't work because it's using the videocard to view the DVD and the print screen takes a capture of screen before it goes to the videocard.
you can generally solve this by using a DVD player that has a "capture frame" option or using a piece of screen grabbing software that supports hardware acceleration. Can't think of any names off hand though so you're gonna have to search for it

If you have a DVD drive, it should've come with DVD playing software - usually PowerDVD or InterVideo. Both of these have a screenshot option.
Alternatively - and this is a big workaround - you can rip the *.VOB file of the segment you're trying to get a capture from onto your hard drive and play it in Media Player Classic, which has a "save image" function, but this is not a very elegant solution.

Okay, thanks folks - the DVD software that came with the DVD drive does indeed have a fully functioning, and painfully easy to use, screen capture function.
Thanks for your help.
