Criminey! It seems that my little corner of Virginia just can't stay out of the news lately! Borat, Jamie Singleton, the elections, Virgil Goode, now this...

I didn't find the editorial to be written in anything near a "loony" tone. I'm more surprised this is the first I've heard of it, but then again, most of my news comes from this site and NPR.
I'd be amazed if anyone on this board actually thought that there was a war on Christmas.
The fact that O'Reilly needed to pull this editorial from a fairly minor paper in order to fuel his fire says that he's kind of desperate to legitimize his crusade.

The only beef I have with the editorial is that it failed to mention John Gibson's hilarious tome The War on Christmas, which really served to up the stupid quotient.

I think it's interesting and indicative that Cousin Bill complained about Mr Radmacher's frequent use of personal attacks. If only he hadn't done so right after calling him a "loon," his point would have been so much better made.

Um err, I listen to his show on my way home from work. He is always calling out some sort of small newspaper or DA on something, he calls on people to either stop reading that paper or to uprise and kick whomeever public official he has a beef with out of office.
I think on of his beefs was with the DA for Boulder Colorado.

Come on! Radmacher is obviously trying to use reality against O'Reilly. And as we've learned from Stephen Colbert, reality has a well known liberal bias.

The only thing I see in the original that could be considered a personal attack is "sanctimonious hypocrite." So here's my question - is it a personal attack if it's true? I don't think anyone would argue against the veracity of "sanctimonious" here. I think hypocrite is supported by the sexual harrasment incident and the selling "holiday ornaments" thing. So calling him a "sanctimonious hypocrite" is fully supported by facts.
Is that really a personal attack?

I don't think there's a concerted war on Christmas, but I think this just sucks: Comedy Central's Sacrilicious Christmas Eve. (Link is to the Catholic League, so ignore the rhetoric and hyperbole.)

They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not" -- Jeremiah 10:3-4.
Me thinks he doth not quoteth verily... That's actually talking about an Asherah pole, that was dedicated to the goddess Asherah. The crafting was cutting the limbs off & shaping it (sort of like a totem pole).

From the article

So the problem is there are too few militant Christians ready to blow themselves up for their cause?
I won't be watching Com. Cen. on Christmas Eve...

Because it's only available on cable TV...and I don't have cable.

I think we cold all agree it is in poor taste.
However, it is the right of Comedy Central to air what they please, and the right of people to watch and enjoy, or turn away in disgust. doubt I will watch, more because those programs don't interest me, not because of my feelings towards Christmas.
Christian ought not think themselves above parody and disrespect. Perhaps some of the programs aired may give Christians insight into what the popular world sees in their actions.

It's presumably the episode called Bloody Mary, from series 9. I feel as though I should write to the Catholic League demanding a retraction: It was a statue of the Virgin Mary, and it was her bottom from which she was spraying blood.

Because it's an exaggeration of a description of an episode...what actually happened was that the boys had a statue of Mary that was believed to be miraculous because it was bleeding from its butt. The Pope came to inspect and verify the miracle, but announced that the statue was not bleeding from its butt. It was simply menstruating, which is not miraculous.

Yes, I give thanks to Comedy Central for enlightening me about my backwards and supersticious religous practices through its comedic stylings, viz. the veneration of the Virgin Mary, the sacrament of penance, and the respect shown to the former Pope.
The fact is, anticlerical satires have been around since the Middle Ages, if not before (just look at the Canterbury Tales and the Decameron). While I don't think it's funny, I acknowledge that everyone has a right to mock what they want. What I don't care for is a cable network's blatant mockery on a Christian holy day. Again, it's their right, but I think it just sucks, and it just goes to show why I don't have cable.

AdmiralDinty I believe I said some christians, not just you. I also didn't say it was "enlightment about a backwards religion." I said it may give insight into the way that religion is viewed by the popular world, or more to the point, in pop culture. his statement can be true. I am sorry if you mistook they intention, it wasn't meant to say otherwise.

I think the best part of the O'Reilly speech was the part where he calls the guy a loon, and then says the guy is bad because he makes personal attacks...
Note that my spell-checker attempted to change O'Reilly to Orally...
Okay, I thought that was funny...

O'Reilly is nothing but a big bully with the belief and attitude that the USA should be the big bully of the world and Christianity has a right to bully other religions.
He can dish it out but he can't take a bit of it.

I watch O'reilly from time to time, just to watch for the logical fallacies in his arguments. He really tends to overexaggerate what ever he is "reporting" on at the time.
He really is becoming (or already is) nothing more than a conspiracy theorist with a national show. I expect any day now he will be reporting that the latest meeting of the liberal secular progressives was led by bigfoot and they discussed enlisting the saucer people to take over Christmas.

Fool! Can't you see that the whole thing is being orchestrated by Hollywood Liberals who sit on the board of directors at the Rand Corporation?
Or have they gotten to you to?

Look, it’s time for some of us to come clean. I’ll admit it, I was a warrior against Christmas, but the events on the ground have changed my mind. Initially, I had good intelligence that Santa Claus was coming up with Ways to Make me go into Debt (WMDs). He mistreated his people – the elves had to work 24/7 to make all those damn Elmo dolls, and the reindeer were forced to go to every residence in the world within one night. I was pretty sure that they all would greet me as a liberator. Kris Kringle kept telling me that he had widespread support amongst the North Pole residents, and would surely be elected as their new leader.
Well, here I am almost 4 years later and, damn, no one told me that the elves and the reindeer had a litany of centuries-old grievances and animosity towards each other, and the only thing that was keeping them from killing each other was the iron fist of Mr. Claus. Turns out that no-good Kris Kringle is a world-class liar; he had been gone from the North Pole for so long that he was out of touch with the popular will of the people. He was rejected as a leader. And I still haven’t found Santa’s WMDs.
Every day, the elves and reindeer seem to think of new ways to attack; not even the sacred gingerbread houses are spared. Meantime, the real threats - Snow Miser and the Heat Miser - are still gearing up their weapons programs (cold and heat, respectively) unabated; and our efforts in the noble fight against the abominable snowman are dangerously understaffed .
So I’ve convened a WOC “study group”, and frankly, they’re about as useful as my study groups in college. One geeky guy has all the notes and everybody else wastes their time getting high until a week before the final.
The mainstream media liberal-types on the Island of Misfit Toys tried to tell me I was wrong. All the Whos in Whoville told me I was wrong. How I wish I had listened. I’m not sure how I’ll ever get us out of this…

I don't think they have gotten me. But that's the thing with the secular progressives. They get you, then they make it so you don't know you've been gotten. So, if I had been gotten, I wouldn't know that I got gotten, and report that I wasn't gotten, my current mental health may make it so the getting me gotten can't be got. Rosie O'Donnel hates america. And those are my talking points for this evening. Remeber, no spin here, I'm lookin' out for ya.

Contact the Easter Bunny. I hear he's sympathetic to the cause.
But don't call Jesus. If South Park has taught me anything, it's that Jesus and Santa are in cahoots. Especially in the plot involving Iraq.
