The Chinese calendar says 2007 is the Year of the Pig, but Warner Bros. is hoping to make it the Year of the Turtle.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hollywood's most successful pizza-eating adolescent reptiles, are hoping to make a smashing big-screen comeback in a new computer-animated adventure.

Yeah, I saw the trailer a few months back. To be honest, it could go either way, and I'm waiting for more info to come out before making a judgement.

I saw that trailer as well and I think it's going to be pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of the source material so I won't be comparing it to that which might help.

The first trailer didn't leave me very inspired. My only thoughts were, "Stop hopping around like frogs! You're turtles damnit!" The second trailer was so/so. Can't really say I'm excited for it, as I thought the first two Turtles movies, while campy, were great fun and captured the Turtle spirit just fine.
Plus, this one probably won't have any completely silly rap songs, and Turtle movies deserve to have completely sily rap songs!

I was skeptical of the CGI approach, but the overall look reminds of me more of a comic book come to life. I agree that it could go either way, but the few scenes with the characters speaking did bring back memories of the old cartoon. I'm hoping it turns out to be fun.

Well on the plus side, Patrick Stewart's in it. If they don't completely waste him.

I once went to see a perfectly dreadful Dana Carvey vehicle called Master of Disguise. It featured, in order of appearance, James Brolin, Edie McClurg, Harold Gould, and Brent Spiner. I spent the whole movie thinking, "What's (insert name of respected actor) doing in this piece of crap?"

That's in the current comic run. Looks like the film is taking things back towards the beginning of the story.

I'll probably see it regardless of reviews.

I'd say comic book movies and horror movies are two types that one should always see without bothering to read the reviews first. Spider-Man and X-Men may have helped the genre seem more "grown up" to critics, but there will always be those naysayers who just say "Eh, it's a comic book movie."
And I do dig that the second trailer shows the humor more. I just hope they keep to that route and don't go too dark. There's nothing worse (well, almost nothing) than a movie with a completely ridiculous premise that takes itself way too seriously.

I never really got into the whole Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle thing for one very idiotic reason
They all wore those little strips of cloth over their eyes as a disguise as though no one could tell them apart from all the other teenage mutant turtles running around who weren't also ninjas
And yes I know everyone will point out the Superman/Clark Kent eyeglass disguise is lame too but at least he's one human(in appearance anyway) among billions so it's not so much of a stretch he could hide his ID compared to four teenage mutant turtles who unknown to everyone are also ninjas too
I mean you see ANY teenage mutant turtles walking about and you just got to assume they are also ninjas too..right?(whether they have a strip of cloth over their eyes or not)
That's all I could ever think about whenever I saw one of their cartoons...I told you it was a stupid reason Posts: 100 | From: Wisconsin | Registered: Mar 2006

I never got the impression that the bandanas over their eyes had anything to do with a disguise. In fact I think it's made clear in the first few movies that they were trying to avoid being seen by humans at all. I think the bandanas might have something more to do with rank of some sort. As far as from a practical standpoint, it was just so us, the readers/viewers could tell them apart.

Well, the whole thing started as a joke. I don't think the creators had any practical purpose for designing the turtles with bandannas, other than it looked amusing to them.
That said, in the sole "Pre-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" flashback, they wore full bandannas that went over the tops of their heads, not folded ones over their eyes. Hmmm.

Yeah, they were originally created as a parody of the comics The Mutants and Frank Millar's run on Daredevil.

I never followed the TMNT phenomenon, though I knew kids who had been fans of the original comic, which was much more darkly comic and violent than it wound up being once it was co-opted for kiddie cartoons, comics, etc. I know they probably dont have the option of going back to the non G-rated version, but maybe a new incarnation would invoke that era a bit.
The whole TMNT saga has some cool interesting factoids. Like that the movies were actually a co-production with Golden Harvest Studios in Hong Kong, the company that made almost all of Jackie Chan's movies before he broke big in the States, so these cheesy kids' movies were an early mainstream (non-grindhouse) incursion into American theatres by a HK film studio. I dig that one of the original creators went on to marry Julie Strain, making him one of the luckiest guys on the planet, IMHO.
Does anyone else remember the various knockoffs? For a while there seemed to be whole bunch of indie comics which nicked the naming formula: Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters, Geriatric Gangrene Jiu-Jitsu Gerbils and so forth. And even Marvel got into the act: if memory serves, Power Pachyderms was originally Grown-up Thermonuclear Samurai Elephants (or maybe I'm confusing two elephant comics).
Anyway...no idea if I'll see the movie. Probably not, unless I'm visiting Ottawa the week it comes out and I might take my eight year old brother.
