The theory goes that if guys attend "chick flicks," it's to win points with the women in their lives. The simple act of attending a chick flick can be viewed as a gesture of incomparable self-sacrifice. But if you gauge who gains the most from this adventure, it's got to be the male of the species.

While I don't disagree with the thesis at hand, I want to know more about the alternate universe in which What Women Want is a chick flick. Mel Gibson starts out as a pig who doesn't know how to say what women want to hear, and ends up as a pig who does know how to say what women want to hear.

Have any other women Snopesters ever had the experience of watching a glurgy movie with a guy and having him become more weepy than you? This happened to me at Awakenings, and it was pretty awkward for both of us!

I haven't had that happen Mari, at least not in what would strictly speaking be called a "chick flick". But my husband always tears up at the end of Field of Dreams. Which, I think is the male equivalent of a "chick flick".

I have the same reaction every time also. I think it's definitely a mostly universal guy thing.

Not that it would surprise anyone on the boards who's ever conversed with me (or who knows that my idol is Data), but SO is always getting weepy at TV shows and movies and books. It's....intriguing. Sometimes, it's actually a bit irritating.
However, the one way to get me going is to kill a dog in a movie or book. That I can't stand.

I have a weakness for romantic comedies and, uh, sometimes I get something in my eye at the end of the movie. No, no, it is OK, I can get it out, no need to switch on the light.
Actually, I have to confess that the final episode in season 2 of the current Dr Who run did make me a bit sniffly.
I have never really felt for the people in the more melodramatic movies unless you count yelling "Stop making your situation worse, you idjits" at the screen

That's really stretching the definition of a chick flick.
And the story linked to in the OP seems more like a promo for The Holiday than anything else.
