Does "Dark Side of the Moon" really synch up with "The Wizard of Oz?"

I've tried it, but it was slightly "off", most likely due to operator error when I tried to synch the cd to the dvd.

My opinion is that there is too much synch to say that it doesn't match up, but not enough to say that it was deliberate.

I only found one coincidence particularly interesting. That was the "which is which" in Us and Them. Otherwise it is just a fun synch and not convincing at all as an intentional one. My favorite synch is Echoes with 2001 Space Odyssey. [Smile]

Yeah, I agree totally. It's definitely not intentional. But it's fun. That's something I used to really enjoying doing.

Now my TV and stereo are no longer in the same room, so I can'd do it.

Then you must watch Wish You Were Blade Runner. (The director's cut of Blade Runner with Floyd's Wish You Were Here. It has to be the director's cut, not the theater version, for it to work right.) It has some delightfully freaky moments.

And speaking as a syncher, for the hundredth time, we are not all brain dead college hippie pot smokers. We would also like to draw to your attention that you don't have to exclusively use Floyd albums. (The Rush Wonka Project proves this.) A lot of synchers use Radiohead. Myself, I don't own any Radiohead albums, so I try Bowie stuff a lot. You get a lot of busts experimenting, but when you find the right combo, it's all good.

We did the ol' Wizard of Oz/ Darkside of the Moon thing in college at the fraternity house. Heavy drinking was involved, so I can only remember the beginning of the set-up, which IIRC, worked pretty well for us.

Trish, I'm glad you posted this. My brother and I used to do a lot of synching (except we called it "dubbing" because we'd actually record music onto the video) and we got some very funny results. I remember a very menacing scene in "Dead Calm" being set to some elevator music with some very funny moments of synching, such as a ship's lights going on and off in time to a little drum solo.

I also sometimes watch TV muted, with other music on just to see what might come up. Techno over sports highlights can give a much better effect than the sound editor on the actual programme was trying for!

But do I believe for one second that any of these things were made with the other in mind? Nah. It's just a little freak of timing that gives enjoyable results.

I'm really excited to try this. Blade Runner is one of BoyfriendS's favorite movies, and he loves "Dark Side of the Rainbow" so I'm sure he'll be interested in this spinoff. Thanks!

I knew someone who did a weekend of movies with DSotM. They watched Vertigo, Blade Runner, Wizard of Oz, and I think the fourth was Gone With the Wind but I'm not entirely sure. They said that out of all four movies, Blade Runner was by far the most amazing when it came to synchronization, then Vertigo, then Oz, then the other one. They also decided that how impressive the synchronization turned out was in direct proportion to the recreational substances being used.

I wasn't overly impressed when I did the Dark Side of the Rainbow thing. There were a few cool moments, but there were far too many times when it didn't sync for it to have been intentional. If it was intentional, they did a very poor job.

I've read some of the interviews in which they were asked about the OZ synch. They just laughed. But one also pointed out that it would have been too difficult to do to back then since home videos did not exist. They would have had to get a print of the film and a projecter to play that in the studio. And for what? None of them had any interest in the film.

The more interesting story is 2001 S.O., the soundtrack of which they reportedly turned down a chance to work on (and later regretted). I still doubt it is intentional but that background story makes the Jupiter/Echos synch more interesting to me: What if the Floyd had done the soundtrack?

I'm intregued, Jenn. i don't know the Vertigo one. Anyone know or remembe the set up?

I've seen one with The Wall played with the Disney cartoon version of Alice in Wonderland, but it's pretty much "meh" to me, except for the trial scene at the end of the film. (There's a shot of the tiny King of Hearts, and at that exact moment, Roger sings "you little shit". But really, not that great a synch to me, YMMV.)

For an easy synch, play whatever the heck you want to Fantasia or it's Italian nod to it, Allegro non Troppo. Also you get pretty easy pickins when synching to silent films (the moody German ones work best; I've had loads of fun with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)

No idea where they started. They'd heard of The Wizard of Oz one before and they'd heard of Blade Runner with other albums. As far as I know, they picked Vertigo and the other film pretty much at random to try out and they likewise just made up the start time on the spot.

I think if you pick any random movie and any random album there will be synchronization. Mute the television and turn the radio on. Turn the television on and look at this guy: - and I bet things will match up sometimes.

Heck, no, this is not true! I think you are misinformed on how synchronization works. It is not simply "Put on Dark Side of the Moon to any movie and watch". (I'm presuming then that that's the album played during Vertigo?)Synching involves so much. A record will not synch with just anything. Trust me, I've busted my butt trying to find an album to synch to some stuff I like that isn't friggin' DSotM (And for heaven's sake, there is more than Dark Side of the Moon or Pink Floyd, for that matter, to work with; but I already covered that in a previous post.) Synching itself has different levels. The vocals do not have to "lip synch" to the movie for this to work, nor do the words have to have a meaning to actions on the screen. Sometimes it's just the mood of the music (not even the words) that synch. There's a Fantasia synch with The Moody Blues' Days of Future Past, for example. (I found it lacking, myself, but you get the point.)

There's another form of synching (called Manipulated Synching), where people choose the music to fit the movie (say, taking different songs from different albums). Myself, I guess I'm a purist, as how can it be a surprise if you're planning it to work? That's making a movie soundtrack that synchs, not a proper synch you discover. Ah, these kids these days...

I think that if you are stoned and listen to almost any music and watch almost any movie simultaneously that you will see connections that you wouldn't ordinarily see. Whether those connections are real or not is debatable.
Wasn't Yellow Submarine the first movie that you were supposed to watch stoned in order to really understand it?

Please see this statement yet again, before you slap a broad generalization on us synchers. I, for one, do not do illegal drugs or drink alcoholic beverages, for that matter, to truly enjoy a proper synch (Which is different than "Get wasted, throw in a movie and put on a record and it'll work, vaguely kinda sorta".).

I have no doubt that the supposed synching of DSotM and the Wiz of Oz was initially "discovered" by synchers who were stoned. The album came out in the early 70s.

I don't doubt it either. I don't belieeve for a second that Roger Waters & crew were watching the movie and making music around it in some bizarre in joke only they would get. But synching is considered an art form, at least in an "underground" capacity, and as such, I am passionate. Perhaps too much so. I think in my last post I took the most offense at being labeled as a stoner (as opposed to the "synching's easy because anything synchs at random" vibes in previous posts), which is half the reason proper synching doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'll try to stay off my pedastal; everyone's got a right to their opinion. I'm a big gal. It just puts my knickers in a twist to be generalized as a stoner for what I (and others) like, and doing something that is fun (but hard!) to do as something that's so randomly easy, it's preposterous.
