Maybe I was wrong, there just seemed to be enough similarity to get me thinking it might be her.
I remember someone mentioning that in the Dr Who story The Hand Of Fear there was an extra who looked a lot like Steve Coogan, but it can't be him as he would have been only 11 at the time.

You meanthis girl in the blue and white hat, left of center? There's a strong resemblance, but I don't think it's Angela Lansbury. Here's a couple photos of Angela Lansbury from about the same time period. She had somewhat large, pretty eyes when she was young. The girl's eyes, in Meet Me in St. Louis, seem rather small in comparison. On the right

Of course, I now know what she looked like back then anyway, since my ex made me watch Footloose with her last summer.
Yup. There's a pic here. She was the cleaning lady who was in to Twisted Sister and had pink bits in her hair.
You know, I remember that scene ("Twisted Sister is a he! Or a they...") and when I first heard she was in it, that character was my best guess. It just seemed to fit her best, at least of what I could remember.
I, too, liked "Ed" although I wasn't a regular viewer. I did see it now and then, which is why I'm surprised I don't remember Ginnifer Godwin being in it. Here's hoping it does turn up on DVD.

I didn't recognize Ashley Judd in the Star Trek: TNG episodes "Darmok" and "The Game" until I was looking at her IMDB profile and noticed the credits. It's not that she was in makeup - it just didn't register while she was on screen.
Mark me down as another who didn't recognize Gary Oldman as Gordan in "Batman Begins". I thought he was just a really good unknown until the credits.

Until I saw it mentioned in another thread, I never realized the young blonde girl in Addams Family Values was the same actress who played Harmony in the Buffy and Angel television series. Of course, now it is completely obvious to me and I don't know how I never recognized her. Just talented, I guess.
Tim Curry in Stephen King's "It" had me scratching my head for a little bit until I placed the voice. I'm sure if "Legend" had not been the second film I saw that featured Tim Curry (the first, I believe, was "Annie"), then I would have spent a lot of time wondering who was playing the devil character. Instead I see movies with Tim Curry and think, "Hey, it's that guy from 'Legend'". . .

Most obvious in the play scene in series 4's closer "Restless", where she delivers her onstage lines in the same manner as she does in the play in the film.

For me and a roommate, it was Charles Napier.
We're watching a marathon of old Star Trek episodes... and that silly "space hippie" episode comes on. He was watching Adam singing "yea... brother..." and suddenly jumped up and yelled, "London NFBSKing England!!!!!" ...
He had recognized that Napier, almost 30 years later, played Commander Gilmour in "Austin Powers"... you know the guy. "Pack my overnight bag, I'm going to London England!" "...and Rogers... feed my fish?"
The same guy played a military commander in DS9's "Little Green Men"...
But ever since then whenever he suddenly recognized someone he'd say triumphantly, "London NFBSKing England!"

When Ma and I were watching Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy, I don't know how far into it before Ma leaned over and said, "Hey! I think that's Guy!" (From Galaxy Quest) When I got home, I went on IMDb to make sure. Then I said, "Oh, crap! He's the Bill Gates wannabe from Charlie's Angels, too!" (Which meant nothing to her, since she hadn't watched it a billion times like me.) Plus he was in Matchstick Men, which we both enjoyed.

Oh my God. I did not know that. That's really odd.
In fact the Star Trek franchise in general probably has the most per capita "I know that person from somewhere" moments both because of their use of elaborate make-up and/or costumes which makes recognizes actors slightly more difficult and their habit of re-using the same actor in multiple roles.

Here's a weird one: My husband and I were watching The Manhattan Project the other day and I realized the girlfriend (Jenny) was Cynthia Nixon. I kept thinking I had seen the boy (Paul) in something but I couldn't place it. When the movie was almost over I excitedly told my husband that I thought he was the same actor who played on The Cosby Show as Theo's friend, the one with cancer that Theo visits in the hospital. After the movie was over I confirmed this on IMDB.

Kind of an opposite reaction, but I remember in college, when I watched "Another World", and in a voice over, the show announced that the character of so-and-so (can't recall the character's name right now) would now be played by Kathleen Turner. And I've been following her career ever since.
Now, I'll try to recall a similar "That was HER?!?!" moment.

OK, here's one: In "Being Julia", the old guy who gives Julia advice (he's her old acting mentor, who's dead) looks like a deranged Benjamin Franklin to me. But it's actually Michael Gambon - the current Prof. Dumbledore from the Harry Potter films. I was watching (again) Being Julia the other night and saw his name in the end credits and went "Ohhhh, that's who that is!".
I remember being impressed with the caustic Brit on the airplane with Rachel in the Friends' episode where she's flying to London for Ross' wedding. Then when I saw him on "House", I immediately recognized him as Hugh Laurie.

They also both appeared in Secret Army (as did Richard Marner), the series that Allo Allo parodied.
Watching the repeats of Secret Army recently, I was surprised to see Terrence Hardiman (The Demon Headmaster) as Major Reinhardt. ETA And John Ratzenberger as a Canadian soldier.

Not quite the right thread, but not enough of a hijack, and I don't think we need another "before they were famous" thread right now. I've just got photographic proof of one.
Many people watch Lost. Many people think Kate is amazingly pretty. Not so many people watch slasher films. Those of us who do notice the background extras. Yes, Evangeline Lilly was in Freddy Vs. Jason as the "magic extra" who appears at both ends of a school hallway at once.

I've seen a couple of episodes of House, and it's rather amusing to have Hugh Laurie being Mr Hard Man American Doctor, and then in an advert break he's doing an oh-so-amusing voiceover for nappies...
