I have an alien in a jar too. I got it from Spencer's about 10 years ago, it doesn't look like that one but it does look pretty real. The fact that I haven't changed the water since the day I bought it so that it smells horrible when you open it only adds to the effect. When I get home I'll take a picture of it and post it here.

Hmm, I think some of the people saying "It's obviously not real!" in the BBC comments thread are missing the point...
Some people have pointed out that "greys" weren't around in the 1940s and if it was really made in 1947 it would have been more likely to be a little green man. It does seem a bit convenient that it's wrapped in a 1947 newspaper.

Well of course we all know it's a fake. The question is whether it's a genuine 1940s fake, or a modern fake wrapped in a 1947 newspaper to give it a spurious provenance, and left in Barney Broom's attic as a prank (a fake fake).
It seems just as likely that Mr Broom created the thing himself, and only pretended to find it in his attic (a fake fake fake), but we mustn't discount the possiblity that Barney is nothing more than an actor, hired by the Sci-Fi Channel to publicise a new programme (a fake fake fake fake).
Okay, I'll fake off now…

quote:Mr Broom reported his finding to the Sci Fi Channel, who called in Professor Adam Roberts, an expert in science fiction literature, to examine the creature.
"I've read some H.G. Wells in my time, so I'm positive it's a model from the 40's!"
quote:Prof Roberts admitted it could be a film prop dating from the 1960s, but said he was not surprised at US denials: "That is the US air force line. They deny these alien encounters. It is quite possible they concoct stories to cover up for more nefarious activities."
Maybe they deny it because...oh, I dunno...they have nothing to do with it??!! Because it's utter bull poopy??!!
Gee, surprise, surprise, the SciFi channel has their mitts on this. I would love to see some good original programming/movies on that channel for a change. Man, has it been going downhill for years. (Then again, I'm a bitter MSTie.)
