In their 'Mission statement', the website declares that
"Through our weekly newspaper and daily Web site, we will provide an independent perspective with a commitment to credible investigations, and provocative and informative stories that others either miss or choose to ignore."
However, even if they think the above story is true, it doesn't fall under the header of 'credible investigations' in my book.

Good to see that he's applying the same standards of "member control" to veterans as was applied to Clinton, anyway...

Well at least the National Enquirer didn't copy it from somebody else...

I'm sorry for bringing up a detail in the article, but I missed Bush giving the finger. When did this happen? (I'm not asleep over here but if I miss something, no one will ever mention it to me because people here still actually avoid the three taboos.)

Antidepressants aren't generally drugs that are "abused". However, benzodiazepines are prescribed for anxiety and to help with sleep, often "as needed". They are much more likely to be abused than antidepressants. Like all psychotropics, for the wrong person, benzos can cause psychiatric problems as well as help with them.
However, any doctor prescribing for Bush should have taken into account his history of addiction and he should not be prescribed medication which can be abused or, if done, should be carefully monitored.

Well if he starts coming onto the TV with slurred speech and a red nose (or pinpoint eyes and nosebleeds) I'll start to believe.
Before then I'll give the old addict the benefit of the doubt.
Also - so what if he has a drink or two, if he can keep it under control (and yes I know that can be hard for addicts), I say why not.

A friend of mine's mother, who is a doctor and has worked with a lot of recovering alcoholics, has always suspected that he was never really all the way off the sauce to begin with. She's never met him, of course, but she does know the signs and he apparently shows just about all of them.
Also, Bush claims to have quit drinking right after he turned 40, but there are at least two accounts of his having been drunk in public since then. One was the now-famous altercation with journalist Al Hunt in a Dallas restaurant, where Bush cursed at Hunt repeatedly in front of the latter's four year old child. The other is a video of a 1992 wedding in which Bush is obviously smashed and makes a spectacularly tasteless speech at the reception. It's probably on the Internet somewhere.

He doesn't come across as entirely sharply focussed on his surroundings, or operating at his full mental level, though, does he? (Or does he?)
He's probably tired and emotional, and has absorbed the party atmosphere from those around him. And his emphasis on the fact that two of his friends "don't like the drink" is just because they don't - if you met them it's the first thing you'd notice about them, other than that they're both very slim and like running marathons - and not because drink is preying on his mind at all.

I suspect it is -- and I suspect taking any former addict into a situation where the addicting substance is being freely partaken, it's going to cause at least a little bit of mental struggle.
