Pregnant women who stop taking antidepressants run a high risk of slipping back into depression, a study found, busting the myth that the surge of hormones during pregnancy keeps mothers-to-be happy and glowing.

I've never been clinically depressed, but while I was pregnant with baby #3, I was miserable. I wasn't glowing from happiness, I was inflamed with frustration and pain. Little wee one pinched my sciatic nerve and made walking, sitting, standing, breathing extremely difficult.
During that pregnancy, I didn't even fake happiness in public. I walked with a cane and "grrrr'd" at anyone who crossed me.

Why did that require a study? I, like most pregnant women, can vouch for the surge of hormones that makes a pregnant woman intensely happy...at random times during the pregnancy for anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours. But what good is that, when the same hormones can also induce a surge of intense anger or deep sadness lasting the same period of time? And add the guilt when you feel sad or angry, because pregnant women are supposed to be happy! I'd say a pregnant woman who was already clinically depressed would need her medication MORE during pregnancy.
