If MSG really did cause obesity, the Chinese and Japanese would have experienced this problem long ago.

And what besides spreading this letter around is he expecting everyone to do about this?

Sorry, but any time I see anything along the lines of "substance X is the cause of all this trouble! substance X is in everything!! and the government don't want you to know about it!!!" my skepticism skyrockets.

The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings...(snip).. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell...
I think if your diet consisted largely of the above, you'd have a weight problem irrespective of how much or how little MSG they put into the food.

Thank God! I was worried that my morbid obesity had to do with my lack of physical activity and poor diet. Guess I will go back to sitting around all day and eating junk food, until they fix this MSG thing.

That sure is a load off.

As for the book, it's total nonsense. MSG has been around for decades and the Chinese and Japanese would be dropping like flies. And what caused obesity, diebetes etc before MSG?

The only bio I could find for John Erb was this:
quote:
John Erb was a research assistant for the Department of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. He was inspired by his parents’ volunteer work in countries such as Guyana, Belize (Bah-Leeze) and Papua New Guinea and entered into the field of human services. For fifteen years he worked as a counselor and advocate for people with mental disabilities, specializing in Autism. When his wife Michelle discovered that their daughter had been poisoned by the fluoride promoted by their dentist, they began the research that resulted in the publishing of their book 'The Slow Poisoning of America'. John’s theory and supporting research, that the food additive Monosodium Glutamate is a direct cause of Obesity, Diabetes, Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, is making waves in both the scientific community, and in the grocery stores and restaurants of the nation.

Besides, how did he know that his daughter was being poisoned by fluoride treatments? IIRC, fluoride poisoning has a very definite set of symptoms.

Wait a second... Hydrolized Vegetable Protein is the same as MSG? I don't think so... I'm not a chemist, but I don't think this holds water. MSG is made by fermenting sugar. HVP is made by acid hydrolysis. Plus, why would manufacturers add MSG and HVP to some products if HVP was really just a fancy name for MSG?

Here are some foods you may wish to avoid if you buy into this particular conspiracy theory. They all contain high amounts of naturally-occurring glutamate.

By the way, MSG has been on the FDA's Generally Recognized as Safe list since 1959, so it's not exactly new.

Truth In Labeling has to be one of my favorite conspiracy sites on the 'net.

Forgive me for poor netique in resurrecting my own months-old post.

quote:

The "glutes" [companies who put MSG in their food, alledgedly because it's cheaper] exert power everywhere through:

-Direct and/or indirect contributions of large sums of money to the election campaigns of elected officials
Generous grants of money to universities and medical schools

-Generous funding of individual researchers who carry out studies designed by the International Glutamate Technical Committee to promote the fiction that MSG is "safe"

-Invitations to researchers to attend international conferences wherein expenses would be paid for cooperative researchers

-Direct and/or indirect purchase of advertising in journals, newspapers, magazines, and on radio and TV

-Influence of their public relations firms

-Harassment of media sufficient to keep major media from airing any story that might suggest that MSG is even potentially harmful

-Contributions to (financial support of) organizations like the American Medical Association and the American Dietetic Association

-Jobs outside of government provided for those government employees who, during their public service, have not made it difficult for the glutamate industry to have its way. (When staffers move back and forth between government and the private sector, it's called the "revolving door" policy.)

-A "good old boy" network, where rich and powerful members of boards of directors of glutamate industry corporations sit on boards of directors of universities, medical schools, major media, publishing houses, and/or associations like the American Medical Association and the American Dietetic Association.

-We are aware of no person, institution, or agency that has claimed that MSG is "safe," that does not have close ties to the glutamate industry, or that has not been at least indirectly remunerated by them.

As in all great "toxins, government research is done in such a way as to produce a "not harmful" outcome by design:

quote:
:
The primary strategy used in most, if not all. . .[MSG] research is to look for evidence of toxicity in subjects least likely to be sensitive to "processed free glutamic acid" (eg. "well subjects" -- people who had never in their lives had any of the adverse reactions attributable to "monosodium glutamate"); to use test materials least likely to produce observable reactions; to use placebos laced with neurotoxic amino acids and/or other substances that will cause identical or similar reactions to those caused by "processed free glutamic acid" test material; to serve "drinks," or a "standard breakfast" laced with neurotoxins with both test material and "placebo" material; to set up protocols that will obscure evidence of toxicity (eg. accepting as adverse reactions only those that occurred within two hours of testing, and those that might be considered mild and transitory, while excluding such reactions as heart irregularities, migraine headache, seizures, nausea and vomiting, and asthma); to allege that finding no evidence of toxicity constitutes proof that their product is "safe;" and to allege that adverse reactions to their reactive "placebos" constituted evidence that reactions to the test material are not reactions to "processed free glutamic acid." To this day, industry researchers routinely.

El "yes, because vast multi-industry international conspiracies are much more cost effective than simply changing ingredients" wood

The FDA can kiss my migraine-prone buttocks. Remember, the FDA also passed Thalidomide and a few other "bloopers". The FDA relies on industry self-reporting, and we know how trustworthy *that* is.

I'm not saying that MSG is toxic, but it and aspartame *do* cause headaches in people that are sensitive to glutamate.

One thing is certainly wrong in the OP:
quote:
Under current FDA regulations, when MSG is added to a food it must be identified as "monosodium glutamate" in the label's ingredient list.
(This FDA page also briefly discusses some of the problems that have been associated with MSG.) The other claims range from similar nonsense to over-reading of scientific abstracts.

The most recent studies (this summer) seem to recommend not adding MSG to food, avoiding high-protein diets (bye bye Atkins), eating a high fiber diet, and getting plenty of exercise. (Where have we heard all that before? Oh, yeah, standard health recommendations.) Most of the studies concern obesity and only use MSG as a way to get fat rats for the studies. So there may be some truth to the idea that eating fairly large quantities of MSG can help you get fat but other studies found in the search found that if (you're a rat and) you eat a healthy diet and get plenty of excercise, the effects will be reduced. (Most of these studies are not concerned with the sodium content which could, of course, be another problem for many people. As the FDA page says, some people also apparently have adverse reactions to MSG. Obviously, these people should avoid it.)

I'm going to understand this to mean I should be as careful with MSG as I would be with other additives, such as salt. Isn't that fairly common knowledge?

At any rate, unless they are breaking the law, no US companies add MSG to food without putting it on the label.

I do have another conspiracy theory about the obesity problem: Millions of people are conspiring to get obese by eating too much and not exercising enough. The reasons for this conspiracy are unknown. Maybe they all just wanted to feel like they were part of something. That's just one theory. [Wink]
