I thought this would be a repeat of the "kid drowned trying to see Spongebob" legend.

There was an episode where they were 'married' and raising a baby clam (Spongebob was the wife).

But Spongebob and Patrick are pretty much a-sexual most of the time, and Spongebob sometimes seems to have a crush on Sandy the Squirrel.

They have whichever 'sexuality' would be most amusing at the time.

I don't think so... he hangs out with her and there is that odd friendly rivalry, but a crush ?

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

There was one scene that was a bit...on the edge : SQ and P fight it out in a chef olympics game (Crabs coaches SQ, Plankton coaches P). Anyway, the final "battle" is a wrestling match (with both of them looking like muscular Rambo-ripoffs) where they both realise they love eachother, despite what there coaches have said, and they walk off hand-in-hand. Not evidence of the statement, but maybe a subtle nudge-nudge wink-wink from the writers ?

People gotta remember its adults that write these cartoons, and they have their own adult humor. Homo-esque humor is big between me and my friends. although we are all straight. Me and my friend paul give eachothers piggy-backs through the mall, stuff like that. It's funny people, loosen the hell up.

Hey, I'm not complaining that a cartoon is brave enough to show a loving, caring relationship between two males. I think most people here would fully endorse it.

omfg its just a silly cartoon. my 3 year old loves it although she wasnt allowed to watch for a while b/c squidward said i hate you and she started saying it everytime we made her mad. i just think its light hearted sillyness from 2 characters that are blissfully unaware.

p.s. when they hwere married i thought it was hilarious when they where discussing the baby in bed and we thought they where sleeping together but patrick was under about 3 mattresses. very funny stuff.
p.p.s. if anyone is a latent homosexual its squidward lmao

But you forgot the reason why they stopped fighting and left the ring as friends again- they learned they still loved each other when it was revealed Spongebob was wearing pink underwear and Patrick was wearing yellow underwear! They DO care! They DO care!!!

This is great. I've been a big fan of Spongebob - hell, my Mom and her friends gave me tons of Spongebob stuff for my birthday (Bedsheets, throw/blanket, pillow/doll shaped like Spongebob, Spongebob birthday cake...) - and now I can say I also like it because I'm a hip gay person! I'm so glad I finally caught a trend before the Fundies killed it for us!

Hehe...my sister started watching it, bullied me into watching an episode, and I'm hooked. It's great to see a cartoon that really caters for all ages.

Though I tend to identify with Squidward, apart from the latent homosexuality.

Which episode is that ?

The only lifeguard ep I remember is 46B : "SpongeGuard on Duty", and there he simply wants the cushy job.

Though I'm not really a die-hard fan, and I probably missed quite a few episodes... specially as USAian shows tend to get aired with quite a delay over here.

First or second episode (I keep seeing it referred to as the first, but he didn't meet Sandy until the second.) 'Ripped Pants'.

On the Spatrick side of things, there is Valentines Day, where Spongebob (with Sandy's help) plans a V-day surprise for Patrick.

B.) After Larry asks Sandy if she wants to go lift weights, Spongebob feels left out, but decides to go with them. After bending down to pick up the "weight" Spongebob accidently rips his pants. After his period of extreme embarrassment Scooter tells Spongebob that it was hilarious. After purposely ripping his pants several more times he takes it a little too far by pretending to drown. After Sandy gets angry at him, she leaves to go with Larry. Spongebob will need to tell her how he really feels in order to get her back.

Guess you have a point. I still think they're just friends, mind - that seems to be message in the majority of episodes.

He's also just friends with Patrick. Like I said, he's pretty much sexless, but when he displays any romantic tendencies it's whichever are funniest for that episode.

I don't think Spongbob really has much of a sexuallity, though I understand why you would think that he's gay (Squidward even more so).

**Hijack**
Somewhat sexually ambiguous characters seems to be a cartoon trend as of late. I'm a nanny, so I watch a lot of cartoons durring the day, and the most obvious is the one eyed alien in the "Lilo and Stich" cartoon. I swear, he cross dresses in about 95% of the episodes, and not just for a quick sight gag. He often remains in drag for half the episode or more. Or maybe I'm just reading to much into it because that cartoon bores me to tears.

Perhaps all three, Sandy, Patrick and SB are all together? Maybe they are swingers, or something like that? Either way, they wouldn't show them NFBSK on TV, so it's up to the imagination.

But then again, there's always one of three possibilities with these rumours:
  1. Such may be some class of a PR exercise by way of the show's creators or producers;
  2. As above, but cooked up by a rival studio to tweak the competition's success; or
  3. Some class of "mud-slinging" by the ilk of the Religiopolitical Right/Bransonkultur camp seeing perceived "homosexual-lobby propaganda" in the context of a children's show (and one with a TV-Y rating [as in "suitable for children generally"] at that!)
But then again, the Religiopolitical Right always seems to get ballistic when they suspect "gay lobby agenda propaganda" being promoted in films and on TV....

In response to your hijack: The alien is supposed to be disguised as Lilo's aunt, so her naturally wears girly clothes to fulfil the requirements of that slot. The fact that he ENJOYS it, however, is another illegal alen genetic mutation altogether.

I think the episode Sidewinder was refering to was the one where, at the start, SpogneBob is watching a clip of a sea anemone moving all around to weird music. Then his pet snail comes in. Startled, SpongeBob goes, "Gary!" and abruptly changes the channel.

Has anyone else thought about the fact that he is a SPONGE living in BIKINI BOTTOM? Or is that only something my brother and I thought about?
It makes me think of that episode of Seinfeld when Elaine gets the case of sponges.

Anyway, my 2 year old loves that show. My Hubby bought some new car cleaning stuff and with that he bought two new sponges. One of them yellow and one of them white with black stripes that was all fluffy and what not. My son kidnapped the white and black one, said it is SpongeBob and sleeps with it every night. He will not give it up. We even bought him a real talking stuffed Spongebob and he still won't give it up. Kids!

As Freud would say, "Sometimes a starfish is just a starfish." [Big Grin]

Or as my parents would say, "Get your mind outta the gutter."

I never noticed Patrick Star looking like a "member". I still can't see it, actually. I don't think I want to see it that way! yeepers!

Alls I'm sayings is I fell in love with this cartoon, and somehow it became hip for gay people, so I was suddenly trendy as well as annoying to quote Spongebob voices.

If you want more "deeper meanings" in cartoons, try to find old "Rocko's Modern Life" tapes. One of the wolves - the son, not Heffer - drags himself out in cheerleader outfits. ("You never understood me, Dad"). There's one scene where the gang is in the middle of a game with a paddle and a monkey. ("Spank the monkey". Get it?) To say nothing of the masterbating reference of Heffer's favorite restaurant, the "Chokey Chicken", and Rocko's pet dog's name, "Spunky". (Rocko being Australian, so we can assume Spunky does not mean what it means in the States. At least not to the 5 year olds watching it.)

While his appendages alone may be a bit phallic, someone stating that he looks like a penis has either a) never seen a penis or b) has had a really interesting sex life. [Big Grin]

IIRC there was an episode (or perhaps the movie) where he put some sort cap on his head that did look similar to an unrolled condom.
