I got this via email just now. Very interesting. I didn't think that non-registered surfers could access or send email or view profile information on board members. The first part in italics (mine) was included in the email. It is a post I made in some recent thread about the Salvation Army. The second part in italics (mine) is my signature quote. The third part in bold (mine) is this person's comment to me.

If this was a board member who emailed me, fine, I have my email available for that purpose, but please have the conviction of mind to at least identify yourself.

I wholeheartedly invite the author to come into the open and join in our discussions! What say you, snopsters

No disrespect intended to the SA, but the bell ringers I have encountered in general drive me crazy. They started last week and will be there until Christmas Eve. They crowd the doors and talk to every one coming and going. Simply put they are nuisances. I stop at the grocery store just about every day and usually pop a $20 in the pot at sometime during the season so I don't see the need for the ringers to try to make me feel guilty for six straight weeks.

Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; give him a religion, and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish

Hmmm....Do you stop to think about WHY the bell ringers drive you crazy or why you mentioned feelings of guilt? Perhaps; consider what the S. Army does with that money...Or churches for that matter. Sure; point out that there are fakes, phonies and hypocrites in that lot and you'd be correct. However; your words give me the impression that God or "religion" is simply the opiate of the masses. You're entitled to your opinion...of course. I think your last quote is WAY off base. It's not religion; rather it's all about relationship ( with God ). We were created for worship and we all worship what we choose. The man who says he doesn't...does now worship himself with tender devotion. :-) Merry Christmas.

I think s/he's trying to save your soul. After all, we can't have your worshiping yourself with tender devotion! That makes you grow hair on your palms....

RD, have you checked your profile to see if its set correctly? And have you replied to the e-mail to see if that person will self-identify?

My guess is that someone meant to PM you, and accidentally hit e-mail instead - the words by those little snowmen are kinda tough to read.

Could be someone who registered just to lurk and use functions only available to registered members.

Don't you have to have a real email address to send mail through the board? Why don't you just ask him/her about identity?

I got some emails about various topics from people surfing the boards. Sometimes they identified thenselves, sometimes they didn't. But none identified themselves as registered snopesters. I'd set my email to a private setting, allowing only registered users to email me through the boards, so this kinda freaked me out.

I re-checked my profile and, lo and behold, my email settings had been changed to public. I have no idea why they changed and I didn't make that change. I reset them back to private and so far I haven't had any problems.

Other people have recently had this problem, too. Check the email settings in your profile - a lot of people's settings seem to have been changed for some reason without their knowledge or consent.

I don't think it was a matter of snopes changing individual settings. I suspect that snopes changed some feature on his setup that made a global change. He's now restored the options, but everyone got the default setting.

It's probably a good idea for everyone who wants their email address to be private to check their profile now.

If I got something like this, I'd just let it roll off my back, but then that's the kind of person I am. If I were feeling particularly saucy, I might respond, "God thinks my sig line is pretty damn funny, TYVM." But interaction is only likely to egg this person on.

It's one thing to sit down and talk religion with someone. I've got a friend I do that with from time to time, tho not recently. He's religious, but not in a cram-it-down-your-throat sort of way, so we can actually have a DISCUSSION, not a religious intervention. I think Ryda's right... this person seems to have taken it upon himself/herself to save your soul... I notice how they segue from the SA thing to churches rather clumsily, which leads me to believe that religion was all they wanted to talk about and tried to use the SA thing to lead into it... and failed.

If you don't want to get wrapped up in it, set yourself to "Ignore," followed by "Delete" and go on with your day. [Big Grin]

I ended up in a book because of something I commented on.

Also, a Dominican priest from Blackfriars at Oxford e-mailed me because I praised his book in a thread.

I don't know, leaving my e-mail public makes things more interesting.

This snopester thinks this other person's idea of a "discussion" is him or her explaining the One True Way while the rest of us listen and undergo an instantaeous conversion a la Jack Chick tracts. Their reply is so busy stuffing words into your mouth that I doubt the concept of exchanging ideas is anything they're interested in. If you'd like to see how the conversation in an open foum would be likely to go, simply browse through some of the longer threads in the Religion archive. Chances are you'll come across a point where some True Believer wandered in and tried to persuade people into his or her line of thinking by repeating "it's true!" for page after page.

Or, failing that, you can simply hit yourself repeatedly in the head with a ball peen hammer. [Wink]

I once got an e-mail once from someone who could see my e-mail address. I had written about one of our casualties in Afghanistan, and I stated that I knew him.

The one who e-mailed me was in the same attack and knew, very well, the same person I did.

It was touching and brought the realism more home.

I have since changed my privacy settings.

I tried clicking on "member profile," "email user" and "private message" before I logged in and got the same "FYI" dialog box containing the message that you must be logged in to perform that function. I had tested it in the past but did it again a few minutes ago to be sure it hadn't changed. So, RangerDog and others, if you are receiving e-mails either through this site or from your e-mail address posted in your profile, it has to be from a logged-in person. I think it's an act of cowardice to e-mail a person anonymously. I also don't think the person meant to send a PM because he/she should be able to tell the difference in the forms that appear for PM and for email options.

I had a lurking snopester contact me once by email. It took forever for him to reveal his snopes name and then I couldn't find him. I took the "email this poster" off of my profile for awhile.

But I guess we have to realize this is a public space.

RangerDog, if it were me, and I am weird this way, I'll admit, I would google both of the email addresses you got to see if you can find any more information about him/her.

Very public. We tend to think in terms of the people we see posting, but there are nearly 5000 registered users, more than half of whom have never posted. We can figure that many of those lurk at least occasionally. Those are just the registered lurkers. The main site features links to recent message board topics and the main site gets even more traffic than the boards.

This is a very public place and we need to be mindful that what we post is there for all to see and will be there a very long time.

This is only a concern if you've chosen to make your email address public. When you have your profile set to "Hide my email address but allow members to email me through the board" (as you do, guru) no one can email you unless they are logged in and registered. Try logging out and doing your google search again.

Actually no. If you run the google search as instructed, and click on "cached" it shows the members actual e-mail address rather than bringing up the e-mail member page. If I click on the result, I get the page, but cached gets the plain text address. Even for guru who's got her e-mail set to "only e-mail through the board." I googled me and I didn't get it at all because I don't have my e-mail enabled at all, except for mods. I'm not sure why it's showing the e-mail address to the google bots, but it is. Unless guru recently changed her options and the cache is old. But Ranger's came up that way too.

You know... I was reading this thread and thinking "Man, I never get random people e-mailing me. What's up with that? Where has all the Salamander love gone?".

Then I realised that my e-mail address was hidden from back when I first joined.

I've changed it now to being publicly available. I get bucketloads of spam anyway so a bucket or two more won't hurt. It also means I have a vague chance of maybe getting e-mail sent to me by an actual person. I think I'll go sit next to my mail program for a little while, just on the off chance someone might e-mail me [Big Grin]

If no one does you can pout in the corner with me. I have lowfat milk and devil's food cupcakes.
