Major quake in Hawaii. My niece is at the University there, and texted us that she's fine, just without electricity. Do we have any Hawaiian snopesters?

While watching various shows late at night, Doesn't a earthquake predict a volcano eruption?
It all has to do with shifting plates or something. My memory is completely shot it seems. I didn't mean to make you worry more, and I am glad that she is ok.

I hope there is no tsunami because of it. We were living in Hawaii back in '65 when the Alaska earthquake sent a tsunami down the California coast and out to Hawaii. Scary.

I hope not, but geology, and pretty much anything that ends in -ology, baffles me.
I wish I could get more info than just her physical well-being, but all circuits are busy. I'm lucky I got a text.

Roadie, try to continue texting her. When cell phone lines are busy, often texts will still go through. That's how I kept in touch with one of my friends from New Orleans after Katrina.

Dear Babby is from Hawaii. IIRC she is not on the Big Island (where the earthquake was centered).
ETA: She's in Honolulu. She's not answering her phone right now, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Right?

I just called and got through to her voicemail. I bet she's out surfing the monster waves.

Thanks for that, Singing. According to that information, Dear Babby is about 150 miles from the quake. My CA earthquake experiences tell me that's fairly far away even for a 6.5 and she may have felt shakes but not much more.

Just talked to my niece - all is okay with her, her friends, and her house. She was actually pumping me for news, since they have none with no power.
Vibes to your brother, glisp.

Vibes to everyone affected by the quake. How frightening!
Roadie, glisp, everybody - please keep us posted as you hear from friends and relatives. When you hear from them, please tell them we're all hoping they'll be safe.

My favorite gentleman is in Honolulu without power right now. Thank the deity of your choice that no injuries have been reported.
I was able to get through for one cell phone call, but as his phone was on one bar we couldn't talk long.
I'm so nervous I can't concentrate, despite knowing he's ok.
Morning Perhaps Pele would be the deity to propitiate in this instance.

I know that Honolulu airport is currently useless due to power failure. An Air Cananda flight had to cancel take off at the last minute this morning because it wouldn't be able to land.

I hope all snopsters and their families are okay. You have my vibes.
Then I want to make sure that Josh Holloway is okay. (Sawyer on Lost.) Yes, yes, I hate myself for being so shallow.

My parents still haven't been able to get in touch with any of their friends. I know it's going to take awhile for communications to get back to normal but they're getting worried.

I received an email from Dear Babby- she is doing well. It sounds as if her home is undamaged and her power is back. They felt it harder than I thought judging by the USGS info.

Hi all, I don't have relatives in Hawaii (I dearly wish I did) but I sympathize with the need for info in a disaster. I have an interest in seismology, and have a resource for you. I'm sorry I didn't post it sooner. This is a link to a USGS page that displays a map actually reflecting how people perceived the shaking and damage. It's voluntarily reported by people in the quake zone thru a 'Did you feel it' link on the USGS website. As such, it's a very reliable gauge of what a person living in the zip code designated felt. The map is updated in real time after a quake, so you can check back, as more people report in the map becomes even more site specific. All of you with relatives in the quake zone, rest easy. It looks as if everything's gonna be alright with this one.
