Subject: What Does Love Mean?

Slow down for three minutes to read this.
A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?"
The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:
_______________________________________________________________________________________

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth."
Billy - age 4
________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs."
Chrissy - age 6
_______________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired."
Terri - age 4
________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK."
Danny - age 7
________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss."
Emily - age 8
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen."
Bobby - age 7 (Wow!)
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate."
Nikka - age 6(we need a few million more Nikka's on this planet)
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday."
Noelle - age 7
________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well."
Tommy - age 6
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling. He was the only one doing that. I wasn't scared anymore."
Cindy - age 8
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"My mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night."
Clare - age 6
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken."
Elaine-age 5
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Brad Pitt."
Chris - age 7
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day."
Mary Ann - age 4
_________________________________________________________________________________________

"I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.
Lauren - age 4
________________________________________________________________________________________

"When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you." (what an image)
Karen - age 7
________________________________________________________________________________________
"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget."
Jessica - age 8
_________________________________________________________________________________________

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing, I just helped him cry"

_________________________________________________________________________________________When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need. Take 60 seconds and give this a shot! All you do is simply say the following small prayer for the person who sent you this.

Father, God bless all my friends in whatever it is that You know they may be needing this day! And may their life be full of your peace, which transcends all understanding. Amen

Interesting that not only did the little kiddies not mention God but the Glurge writer appends God to the end of the article in a way that has no relevance to subject in question ("What does love mean").

And by interesting I mean nauseating.

A lot of them don't sound like the way kids talk. I work with kids for a living and have never heard anything like some of the more sophisticated statements allegedly from four year olds.....

I got to Nikka (which sounds so wrong if you're English. why would you name your kid after underpants?) and had to stop. Eurgh.

ETA: I forced myself to go back and finish. Eurgh once again. Why are all the ones about parents 'when mommy xxxxx daddy'? Doesn't daddy love mommy?

Oh and a contest for the most caring child?! Talk about mean. "sorry johnny, you just weren't caring enough. I know you saved a sackful of puppies and kitten from drowning, but that kid sat on someone's lap!"

I somehow missed that cue once. I told a friend I was quite attracted to that although I was a lapsed Catholic, I still had a severe weakness for plaid skirts. Next day, guess what she was wearing?

And somehow I still didn't ask her out. Nice to know a seven-year old can pick up on what I couldn't! [lol]

That is almost straight from a Chris Rock bit. Either Elaine's parents have been letting her watch Chris Rock, or it's bunk. You decide.

Yes, their linguistics are too advanced, but as for any of their "love" ideas being "deep" that's a laugh. The truth is, kids that age can't think deeply yet, let alone teach adults to.

It's obviously been around for a while, as the list appears here, with an acknowledgement saying the author had seen it a few years ago.

Also would most kids respond to the question with some variation of "Eurrrgh, don't be soppy!"

Lol Yes. I can see some kids giving one or two word answers. "Mushy stuff." for example. Or "Hugging and kissing." because that's what they see around them as love.

I love the subtle inflection that God feels that if you don't send this message on to at least 10 other people, then you're just not caring enough.
I can stomach glurge, but I can't stand that little message thrown in at the end.

Love quite obviously is caring enough about your friends and family not to attempt to place them in a diabetic coma from this kind of drivel.

Yeah, and it's not even sugar-sweet, it's saccharin - as in artificial. And any attempt at emotional blackmailing the reader into forwarding on a chain just irritates the heck out of me. And tossing in any reference to God/Jesus/Christ makes me seethe. God doesn't use the tools of liars, spammers, hoaxters and scammers to send humanity any kind of message. When you consider how many chain letters are full of malicious lies about people, sick kid hoaxes, and tries to tell you what kind of second-rate human you are by not forwarding something, then do the most hypocritical thing of all and throw God into the mix, Graaaaaaaargh! Why so many of my friends/family/list members just don't see the obvious, and quit forwarding junk, period, I don't know. Some people choose to remain willing, witless victims of fwds, and that makes me scream.

Hmmm... I've heard wisdom from the mouth of babes. Usually though it isn't the result of some deep connection with the universe but more a case of a haphazard observation by the child being coloured by my adult understanding. Almost a little like astrology -- say something vague yet seemingly meaningful and people will supply their own meaning.

Having said that, none of those supposed quotes appear to have actually been spoken by young children.

ETA: Except maybe the 2nd last one about the stars. That I could believe from a 7yr old. Sal Jr at that age confided in me that the house we were living it at the time was "filled with hundreds of secret passages that have skeletons in them I have to fight to get past". He was very serious about it.

Ah, so that's the source of that quote...I remember seeing it in an AIM profile of some guy I went to high school with and I thought, "What the hell?"

Also, I agree with jessboo about how it's unsettling that none of the ones that mention both parents have Daddy showing Mommy affection. Mommies need love, too!

Noelle's statement made me wonder if she likes Cardcaptors. (NOT Cardcaptor Sakura)

Unfortunately, Mary Ann's statement got to me. My family has a puppy, and when I come home, she jumps on me and licks me all over my face.

I also think Karen's parents should wonder what their kid is watching on their sattelite/digital cable channels they purchased.
