Hmmmm, they 'scream' in direct reaction to a stimulus. A person can argue therefore that they "think".

It appears that perhaps vegans may have to become "air-ians" to keep from killing 'sentient' critters even whilst ODing on salad. HAH!

It's when they're explaining Calvin's science experiment with the bean plants. Calvin read something about plant responses in an old newspaper--plants react when cut, when their owner took off and landed in a plane, etc.

Calvin grew three bean plants, one he left at home, one he just watered and cared for, one he spoke to and encouraged to grow. Remember?

Even older news. Roald Dahl wrote a short story called "The Sound Machine" in 1949 which was all about a man who invents a machine for listening to plants and trees and finds, to his everlasting horror, that they scream and wail in great agony when picked or pruned or eaten. He ends up going mad.

Ah, but was Dahl's story pure fiction, or based on experiments that showed plants react to stimuli that were conducted in the 40s?

I think that one can just as accurately say that plants laugh when under stress. Remember that the scream is not actually emitted by the plant - it is created by a computer in response to gas emission by the plant.

All the experiment seems to show is that plants respond to tissue damage by releasing ethylene gas.

They say you learn something new everyday. Now if I get apples and bannanas at the same time I won't keep them together. Screaming fruit? Not so useful. Keeping bananas edible longer? Very useful.

i guess wales wouldnt be a peacful and nice place if they screamed constantly (not that it is now).

imagine how scary it would be for gardeners, as if they were hurting their plants, the neighbours might get suspicious..

I bought a non-fiction book called "Supernature" from a second-hand book sale a while back. I have only glanced at the contents, but at one point the author talks about a study where a scientist hooked a houseplant up to an EEG machine. He then lit a cigarette lighter, with the intention of burning one of the plant's leaves. Before he even got near the plant, the EEG registered a dramatic response from the plant. Apparently, the plant was scared by what was going to happen to it!

So, he discovered that a plant responds to changes in heat and/or light? Not exactly rocket science there.

On the other hand, if he really didn't even get near the plant, how did he know the plant's response was due to the cigarette lighter?

In between these two, Ian Fleming had James Bond mention that "roses scream when they are picked" in one of his novels. I believe it was "Casino Royale", which was published in 1953.
